Terrific article! Impressed with Pierre's responses. Canada has been behind the curve for most of my life. All this stuff you mentioned should have been done a long time ago. Canada is wealthy, but acts as poor nation. It needs a wake up call, no doubt, and Trump is making it happen whether you like it or not.

Thank you! And I agree. It’s been sad to witness, but I’m glad to see Pierre mentioning these types of changes. Makes me excited for the future of Canada. I personally believe Trump is a purposeful idiot. And I don’t mean that negatively. He makes stupid threats, scares the world, but when he’s with them privately, I do believe he does what’s right for the U.S. There’s no way to tell, but I do believe what Pierre is saying about his U.S.-Canada relations, paired with Trump, will end up being an incredibly productive partnership.

Great article, gives me a glimmer of hope. Although I had the same hope when I voted for Trudeau 10 years ago, so I have my reservations. But one thing I would love to know. If we give the US such a bargain on oil, surely they sell us something at a large discount too right? In the spirit of good neighbours helping each other out and what not. My apologies if this is answered in the post but I didn't get through it all.

Thanks Richard! That’s understandable. Like I mentioned near the end, you really can’t predict what a politician says is going to end up as reality. It’s extremely unlikely for that to happen with what we’ve seen in the past with previous leaders. Sadly, that’s just how it is. And no, not in the slightest. The U.S.-Canada relationship is incredibly one-sided. We depend on the U.S. to be our trading partner. If it weren’t for them, our economy would collapse. So the U.S. gets cheap energy, and Canada continues to give it because we have no other choice. The U.S. gives absolutely nothing on-par in return. Because they frankly, don’t need to. We’re good neighbours don’t get me wrong. Canada has arguably the closest political and economic relationship with the States of any nation. Which is an awesome place to be in. But we give more than we get, make less profits than we should, and sell less than we can. And that needs to change. Hopefully it will. I’d love to strengthen the relationship with the U.S. to where it actually benefits us, but I’m also very optimistic about selling more to the world.
